FAQ

We try our best to cover some of the questions you may have. If you have even more questions, we are here to answer them.

How does Nutch compare to coffee, energy drinks and sleep aids?

What we mean by each of the terms:

  • Sleep quality: The level of self-satisfaction with all aspects of the sleep experience
  • Morning drowsiness: A time lag experienced when the brain and body transition from a sleeping state to wakefulness
  • Boost of energy levels: The feeling of increased liveliness and mental clarity
  • Tolerance: The diminished response over the course of repeated or prolonged use of a substance, which often leads to taking higher amounts over time
  • Sleep architecture: The basic pattern of normal sleep that moves between two main types of sleep—rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM)
  • Dependence: The reliance on a substance that is developed after frequent use, often with withdrawal symptoms when the person stops using it

General questions

It is best to take your Nutch package as close to the time you go to bed as possible, preferably right before you feel you are going to fall asleep. For optimal results take it when you know that you will get fewer than 8 hours of sleep.

Glycine, the main ingredient in Nutch, is an amino acid that you likely consume everyday – the human body needs 2g of it daily to function optimally. We recommend taking it once at night, as indicated on the sachet, however a bit more than one stick pack is generally considered safe.*

Neither glycine nor water expire. However we recommend that you consume your Nutch by the date listed on the package and that you take it as soon as you open it. If you leave a sachet open it will crystalize. If this happens, toss that one and take another.

Nutch works best, and its effects can be felt more, when not combined with products that make you drowsy, and when you know you will likely sleep less than 8 hours. However, if you feel that you need something to help you sleep, Nutch can still work its magic.

Science

According to a study by Yamadera et al., when volunteers experiencing continuous unsatisfactory sleep were given 3g glycine before bedtime, their sleep quality significantly improved.*

Nutch's glycine inhibits neurons in the brain (hypothalamic orexin/hypocretin).* These particular neurons are responsible for wakefulness and energy (Frontiers, Neuron).

Thanks to that, glycine helps you unwind and reach deep sleep more quickly while improving your quality of rest (ZRTLab, Ajinomoto).

It shortens the time it takes to fall asleep and stabilizes the sleep state, with no alterations in sleep architecture, unlike traditional sleeping drugs (Yamadera).*

When you wake up and open your eyes, it can feel like you have already had a cup of coffee or tea. Why? Because Nutch is at work before, during and after you sleep.

Once you take your Nutch at bedtime, the glycine gets quickly absorbed by your digestive system. It then gets right to work and targets your 24-hour biological clock, which basically controls when you want to be asleep or awake, in your central nervous system. It helps convince your body that it is time to sleep. Glycine nudges you to sleep by helping to reduce your core body temperature, which is key for getting your body to rest and for you to fall asleep faster.*

In the morning, by modulating certain processes in the brain, this amino acid also corrects feelings of fatigue and sleepiness caused by poor sleep from previous nights.

Since glycine is naturally produced in the body and found in plenty of common foods, like beans, spinach, asparagus and seaweed, it is highly unlikely to experience an allergic reaction from the consumption of Nutch.*

However, on very rare occasions, people have reported nausea, upset stomach, or vomiting after taking glycine, this is usually due to taking much higher quantities than the 3g in each sachet.* In the event of an extremely unlikely severe symptom, immediately contact your healthcare provider, even though it would unlikely be related to Nutch.

Studies (Serrita et al., and Heresco-Levy et al.) have shown that people receiving up to 107g of glycine per day for weeks have experienced no serious adverse effects. Each Nutch package contains approximately 3g of glycine. With that in mind, consuming a little more than 1 sachet is safe.* Nevertheless, we do not recommend that you exceed a single serving.

Should you experience any symptoms, even if those might not be related to Nutch, contact your physician or healthcare provider.

Taking Nutch, and the glycine it contains, does not cause any addiction or need to consume an increasingly higher dosage to obtain the beneficial effects.* Nutch is a product that can safely be consumed daily without fear or worry of dependence or withdrawal effects.*

Ingredients

Amino acids are molecules that combine to form proteins and are also known as the basic building blocks of life. They have many different roles in the human body, each just as critical as the next. Our bodies use amino acids as neurotransmitters or to build proteins and hormones. They are essential for breaking down food and repairing body tissue.

Amino acids are classified into three groups:

  • Essential amino acids
  • Nonessential amino acids
  • Conditional amino acids

Essential amino acids can't be produced naturally in the body and must be consumed through our diets.

Nonessential amino acids can be produced naturally in the body.

Conditional amino acids are nonessential, except when the body is suffering from an illness and can't produce them naturally.

Glycine has a naturally sweet taste. Its name originates from the Greek word for sweet, "glykys."

It tastes like sweet water, which is the flavor of glycine itself. Nutch is vegan, non-GMO, and 100% free of added sugar, dairy, gluten, or allergens.*

Glycine is known to boost mood too, since it stimulates the production of serotonin—the hormone that makes you feel good.

Glycine is also one of the three amino acids that make creatine, which is key to build muscles and provides them with an energy boost when doing intense workouts or weight lifting.

If better sleep, good mood and beautiful muscles isn’t enough, Glycine is also the main amino acid in collagen — which is responsible for strength, structure and support of your skin, muscles, bones and connective tissues.

Alongside Nutch, you can also eat more protein-rich foods and certain greens such as quinoa, beans, seeds, nuts, dried seaweed, asparagus and cabbage.

Nutch does not change your sleep pattern or affect the natural stages of your sleep.* It simply allows your body to enter a deeper sleep cycle faster and stay there longer.*
